RING - NECKED DUCK

Nadin’s Flash, Newall, Swadlincote, South Derbyshire. 11th April 2007.

This stunning drake Ring-necked Duck was found by a local birder (well done Keith, who also found the Glossy Ibis here, last year) on the evening of 9th April. It was in the company of a small flock of Tufted Duck and on occasions was seen to be displaying to the small party of females. It was in immaculate plumage and being on a small coal flash water, the bird gave excellent views although was very unapproachable, often swimming away to the most distant part of the flash if approached to closely. This North American duck is a rare vagrant to Derbyshire.
